Learn about tools to control the land in your community!
This conference is a unique opportunity to learn about three land control tools through case studies including:
- Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative (DSNI), a community land trust and comprehensive neighborhood change effort in Boston
INCLUSIONARY ZONING/INCLUSIONARY HOUSING
- Baltimore’s new Inclusionary Zoning ordinance.
- Staples Center in LA
- Gates Rubber Plant Redevelopment in Denver
The Center for Community Builders (CCB), the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy (LILP), and the Annie E. Casey Foundation are sponsoring this national conference on how communities can employ land control and community building tools to ensure that:
- residents participate fully in land use decision making;
- public and private investments benefit current residents in terms of employment, affordable housing and ownership opportunities; and
- development planning is used to minimize displacement of residents.
Who Are the Trainers and Presenters?
Trainers and presenters include practitioner experts as well as nationally recognized academics, researchers, and consultants.

- Gus Newport is a an MLK Fellow at MIT, a program consultant to the Vanguard Public Foundation and the Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation.

Agenda
Conference begins at 9:00AM on November 14 and ends at 1:30 pm on Friday November 16th
DAY 1: All participants will attend a 90-minute introductory workshop on each of the tools.
DAY 2: Participants choose one tool to learn about in a full-day training session (you must register in advance for the topic of your choice).
DAY 3: Participants will have a choice of consultative sessions with members of the training teams and their peers and discussion groups on topics selected and facilitated by conference participants.
Who Should Attend?
The conference is designed for community building practitioners who are not actively engaged in land control issues, but have constituencies that could be displaced by reinvestment and development in their neighborhood.

Organizations and cities are encouraged to send teams of three people in order to cover each of the land control tools discussed in the day-long training session.

This Conference is a three-day conference with options to attend the full conference, two-days only or one-day only.
This Conference offers Lodging and Meal Plans at the conference center. Please note that there is also an option for a Meal Only Plan for those of you that do not require overnight accommodations but would like to take advantage of the Breakfast and Dinner at the facility as dining options are limited in this area.
The table above outlines the fees associated with Registration to the Conference, as well as the Lodging and Meal Plans.
Registration covers all conference events and materials. The lodging and meals fee covers all meals, snacks and lodging for three nights at the Maritime Institute.
Pre-Registration for Consultative Sessions
During the morning of the third day of the conference, the training teams will be available for consultative sessions with groups of participants. The purposes of these sessions are to permit conference participants to either 1) address specific issues, problems, or challenges regarding their local work, or 2) discuss general strategy with the training team members with an in-depth discussion of the local context.
If there is a particular issue, problem or challenge, or a strategy need for which you would like consultation with a training team member, please complete and submit the linked form by November 1st.
