Land Control Tool Trainings
The conference will focus on three land control tools that have proven to be effective tools in producing land use decisions that substantially benefit low-income communities of color: community land trusts inclusionary zoning ordinances, and community benefit agreements.
All participants will attend introductory workshop on each of the tools. Participants will choose one tool to learn about in a full-day training session on the second day of the convening. Participants will register for the all day land control training sessions when they register for the conference. Registration in each workshop is limited to 34 participants. Cities and organizations are encouraged to send teams of three to attend the conference to ensure full coverage of the workshops.
The training teams for each land control tool are:
- Community Land Trusts: May Louie and John Barros of Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative, John Davis of Burlington Associates, Selina Mack of Durham Community Land Trust.
- Inclusionary Zoning: Alan Mallach of the National Housing Institute, Nico Calavita of San Diego State University, Dennis Keating of Cleveland State University, Stuart Katzenberg of Maryland ACORN, Bibi Hidalgo of Citizen's Planning and Housing Association, and Brian Augusta of California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation
- Community Benefits Agreements: Madeline Janis Aparicio and Maria Loya of Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy, Robin Kniech of Front Range Economic Strategy Center, Laura Wolf Powers, Brad Lander and Wendy Fleischer of the Pratt Center for Community Development.
The conference will yield a suite of training products on each land control tool for use after the conference. For more information on the traing products click here.
